HISTORY
The Mount Charleston Fire Protection District was established in 2015.
With the establishment of the MCFR, the official formation of a union, Mount Charleston Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 4621. However, the union’s history began several years prior.
The establishment of the Mount Charleston Fire Protection District was not the beginning of Local 4621. Local 4621 was started in 2006 when the stations were run under the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF). The firefighters decided to join the fire service brotherhood and establish relationships with departments throughout the state of Nevada. To get some help, the NDF Mount Charleston District teamed up with the NDF Elko District to form the Great Basin Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 4621. Although they were a state entity with no negotiation rights, they had established themselves as an organized union.
Several years later, NDF changed its mission and released its responsibility of handling all-risk fire stations in 2015. As a result, the NDF Elko District started the Elko County Fire Protection District, and the NDF Mount Charleston District started the Mount Charleston Fire Protection District, both no longer functioning under the NDF. On July 1, 2015, Local 4621 was reestablished under the name Mount Charleston Professional Fire Fighters. From this point on, the department was funded by Clark County and gained the right to collective bargaining. As a newly organized union, the firefighters of Local 4621 were then able to negotiate for better safety standards, wages, benefits, and more.
IAFF Local 4621 has come a long way since its inception, but the goals remain the same: to always be ready to preserve life, protect property, and conserve the environment. The Mount Charleston Professional Fire Fighters remain dedicated to providing exceptional service to the residents and visitors of Mount Charleston.
