With the establishment of the MCFR, the official formation of a union, Mount Charleston Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 4621. However, the union’s history began several years prior.  

The establishment of the Mount Charleston Fire Protection District was not the beginning of Local 4621. Local 4621 was started in 2006 when the stations were run under the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF). The firefighters decided to join the fire service brotherhood and establish relationships with departments throughout the state of Nevada. To get some help, the NDF Mount Charleston District teamed up with the NDF Elko District to form the Great Basin Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 4621. Although they were a state entity with no negotiation rights, they had established themselves as an organized union.
